What missed calls really cost a service business
Every missed call is a customer who may have called someone else. Here is a simple way to estimate what it costs you.
Why unanswered calls matter
When someone needs a plumber, roofer or HVAC technician, they are usually ready to book. If nobody picks up, most will not leave a voicemail. They call the next company on the list.
A simple way to estimate your own number
Use your own numbers, not an industry average. Even a cautious estimate usually shows a cost worth fixing.
- Count how many calls you miss in a typical week. Your phone's call log shows this.
- Estimate what share of those would have become paid jobs.
- Multiply by your average job value.
- Multiply by 52 weeks to see the yearly figure.
How to stop losing them
The fix is to make sure every call gets answered and every caller gets a next step: a booked time, a callback, or a text. That can be a person, an answering service or an AI receptionist. The right choice depends on your call volume and how you work.
